WASSP: the marine professional's multi-tool
  • WASSP Wide Angle Sonar Seabed Profiler is a unique, versatile and powerful electronic fishing, marine surveying and scientific research tool.

  • Powerful, versatile and cost-effective

The WASSP WMB-160F multibeam sonar is a real-time 3D seafloor profiler, which is also able to display 2D bathymetric contour maps. In addition, it functions as a conventional echosounder, a side-scan sonar, and a triple-beam sonar with variable beam width. It can display up to four different sonar views at once. The WASSP WMB-160F uses a transducer frequency of 160 kHz to transmit and receive 112 sonar beams across a 120deg swath of the seafloor and water column port-starboard of the boat in depths of between three and 200 metres. In 100 metres of water, the swath will cover a strip of sea floor 346 metres wide from port to starboard - 173 metres either side of the vessel. Sonar information is used to generate 112 seafloor points - one bottom point or detection every 1.54m - which are joined in real time to generate accurate 2D and 3D bathymetric profiles. Information is also obtained on seafloor hardness to enable the 2D Contour mode to display seafloor profiles by either depth or by seafloor hardness. The system also offers conventional echo sounder, triple-beam and side scan sonar modes with split-screen functionality allowing the simultaneous display of up to four different views. With WASSP, seafloor profiling is up to 100 times faster than with conventional echo-sounders, while WASSP WMB-160F is both more compact and much less expensive than conventional hydrographic profiling equipment.

  • A wide range of applications

Although developed initially for commercial fishing, WASSP has a multitude of other applications. Marine professional customers include hydrographers, marine police units, salvage companies, search and rescue organisations, marine research organisations, dredging companies, marine exploration companies and workboat operators. With WASSP, marine professionals can generate detailed seafloor profiles to accurately locate seafloor structure, shipwrecks and foreign bodies in the water column. Seafloor hardness and backscatter information is readily available, and the WMB-160F's sidescan function has applications for hydrographers, marine archaeologists, wreck hunters, salavge engineers and other marine professionals.

  • Easy to live with

WASSP's PC-Windows XP-based software is easy to use and will run automatically without requiring continuous operator input. All the functions are controlled by a computer mouse. WASSP data can be exported to a third-party chart-plotting system and raw multi-beam sonar data can be saved for further analysis. Wassp is an extremely useful and cost-effective system, which captures critical information about the marine environment. It's the essential multi-tool for marine professionals.
